A Home for your Makeup

When decorating a bathroom, people often consider two main components – color and function. Is the color palette aesthetically pleasing and can items be simply stored and easily reached? However, women may want to take a closer look at their beauty routine when designing their bathroom’s decor, as their cosmetics can have a significant effect on the washroom’s interior.

If you often apply makeup in your bathroom, as opposed to at a vanity in your bedroom or by your closet mirror, select a wall color that won’t interfere with your complexion. Choosing a shade that is too warm, such as a rich orange or deep red, may reflect off your face and cause your natural skin tone to appear different. Conversely, you may also want to steer clear of lavenders and greens, as these hues can wash you out.

While natural light is best for applying makeup, the sun won’t be up around the clock. When installing lighting, experts suggest using halogen bulbs, instead of incandescent bulbs (which won’t illuminate your face as well) and fluorescent lighting (which can have a greenish hue that throw off your natural coloring).

Finally, it’s time to store your makeup. Anybody who has ever been to a home goods store knows that there is a seemingly endless amount of storage possibilities. However, some may be smarter than others.

First, divide your cosmetics into the items you use every week and the products you less regularly. Store the less-used supplies in a makeup case that can be neatly tucked away in a linen closet, under the bathroom sink or next to your mirror. If you can’t find a case that suits your needs, go to an art supply store and pick up a craft box designed to organize paints and brushes. It may not appear as polished as a professional makeup case, but it will serve the purpose just fine.

Next, survey the remaining beauty products, the items you want at hand, within reach on a daily basis. If you have a smaller amount of items, consider storing them in a woven wood box in a color that matches your bathroom’s interior. Line the box with a paper towel to keep its lining fresh, protected from spills, and free of cosmetic residue. However, if you have enough beauty supplies that you find yourself digging around in one box to find your favorite eyeliner, opt for multiple storage solutions instead.

Small trays, such as clear drawer organizers, are the perfect size for cosmetics, and will help you to neatly organize your beauty supplies. Divide your makeup by product and then buy a separate tray for each group – eyeliners, shadows, lip color, cheek color, etc. For exceptional ease, select clear, acrylic containers, as you can clearly see where each pencil or gloss stick is hiding. If you prefer to have your cosmetics concealed, however, opt for opaque boxes that will keep its contents hidden.

Finally, don’t forget to find appropriate storage for you makeup tools. Purchase a separate container for items like your eyelash curler and pencil sharpeners, and keep it near your cosmetics. There are a variety of options for storing brushes – from bags to boxes – but if you are using the applicators every day, these two methods may be a waste of time. If you don’t have enough room to lay brushes flat in a bathroom cabinet, you may want to consider storing brushes much like you would pencils at an office. Pick up a round container and display the applicators brush-side up, but remember to make sure that the jar isn’t overcrowded (as brushes can become deformed when bristles are packed too tightly).

When designing your bathroom’s decor, you don’t have to choose between aesthetics and function, as long as you carefully consider your beauty routine and look for storage that fits your needs.
